Sizing Bathroom Ventilation for Gulf Coast Humidity
April 22, 20265 min read
Houston humidity punishes undersized bath fans. Mold on the ceiling is a ventilation problem, not a paint problem.
Size by volume, not by code minimum
We calculate eight air changes per hour and add capacity for enclosed water closets and separate showers. In practice that means a 110 to 150 CFM fan for most primary baths, not the 50 CFM builder unit.
Duct runs kill performance
A rated fan on a long, crushed, flex duct moves a fraction of its label. We use smooth-wall rigid duct, the shortest practical run, insulated in the attic to stop condensation, and always terminate through the roof or wall — never into the attic.
Controls people actually use
Timers and humidity-sensing switches keep the fan running twenty minutes after the shower, which is when most of the moisture leaves the room.
The takeaway
Fan model, duct path, and control all have to be right. Two out of three still molds.
