Warm Minimalism Is Replacing Gray in Houston Homes
July 8, 20265 min read
The cold gray-and-white era is over. What replaced it in Houston is warmer, quieter, and far more durable as a design choice.
Wood is back, but as a texture
White oak in rift-sawn or quarter-sawn cuts on islands, hoods, and open shelving, paired with painted perimeter cabinetry. It reads warm without turning the whole kitchen into 2005 honey maple.
Fewer materials, better ones
Two cabinet finishes, one stone, one metal. Restraint is what makes a room look expensive five years later, when the trend that produced four competing finishes has passed.
Layered light instead of can lights
Task lighting under cabinets, decorative pendants at the island, and dimmable ambient light on separate circuits. It is the least expensive change with the largest effect on how a room feels.
The takeaway
Warm, quiet, and few materials ages better than bold and many.
